OAKLAND, CA (Monday, July 18, 2016) – Strike Out Stroke (Strike Out Stroke™ (SOS)), the country’s largest grass roots stroke symptom awareness campaign, is spreading a life-saving message at ballparks across the country this summer with 45 stroke awareness events coming to professional Major and Minor League Baseball games nationwide, including the game this Sunday, July 24 when the Oakland Athletics take on the Tampa Bay Rays. The mission of these events is to further educate the public about F.A.S.T.


F.A.S.T. is an easy way to remember the sudden signs of stroke and helps to enhance responsiveness to stroke victim needs. The acronym stands for Facial [drooping] look for an uneven smile], Arm [check if one arm is weak], Speech [listen for slurred or unintelligible speech] and Time, [stroke is an emergency, call 911]. [Only 20% of Americans can name even one symptom of stroke]. By educating the public to think F.A.S.T. and call 911, chances increase that more stroke [victims will be diagnosed quickly to] get life-saving treatment.

As fans and attendees enter the stadium, volunteers will distribute pamphlets, branded drink koozies and magnets displaying the F.A.S.T. message while also conducting on-site blood pressure screenings. Fans will be educated on the importance of recognizing a stroke and acting quickly to call 911.

As anticipation mounts for the game to start, Strike Out Stroke will put a face on the nearly 800,000 Americans who suffer a new or reoccurring stroke each year by introducing five stroke survivors at the Oakland Coliseum - most of whom are between the ages of 26 and 45. By sharing these moving survival and recovery stories, SOS intends to impress fans with the reality that stroke is a risk for people of all ages, genders and ethnicities. Even though the majority of strokes occur in people over the age of 65, one quarter of them are 45 and younger and this percentage of younger victims is increasing every year.


A’s General Manager, David Forst, will be welcoming longtime family friend, Sean Entin, 42, (@seanentin) a stroke survivor, to the field at Sunday’s Game to throw out the Ceremonial First Pitch. Four years ago, Sean suffered a massive stroke, which altered his vision, hearing, and speech; and left him with no working memory and damaged fine motor skills. Sean spent months in a rigorous “boot camp” where he had to relearn how to eat, shave, shower and walk, followed by hundreds of hours of home health rehabilitation and a community re-entry program. Forst’s family followed Sean’s recovery closely and David is now excited to help Sean demonstrate what a severe stroke survivor can attain to achieving their independence while helping Oakland Fans understand the lifesaving FAST Message.


During his rehabilitation, Sean began to notice that other stroke survivors were leaving these programs too early due to lack of funds or limits to their health insurance. These survivors were war veterans, athletes and other patients who desperately needed more time to rehabilitate their bodies and minds. He became all too aware that if a person suffers a [Stroke] or Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and does not have proper health insurance or their own finances to cover the cost of rehabilitation, they might never reach full recovery.


Determined to help those affected by [Stroke] Sean founded Move 2 Improve Foundation (Move 2 Improve Foundation). This organization helps survivors find and fund physical therapy, occupational therapy and psychotherapy throughout their recovery process, empowering stroke survivors to learn how to adjust, ease back into their lives and society.


Move 2 Improve and Strike Out Stroke are now collaborating to beat stroke and help stroke survivors because of SOS’s massive outreach touching an astounding 2.5 million people live resulting in delivering the FAST Message 20 million times in the last two years alone.
